First Street and Bowery![]()
First Street and Bowery, ca. 1930Leon DoliceIn 1879, the brewing of beer, ale, and porter by the English method, which did not require refrigeration, supported over 78 small brewing companies in Manhattan alone. The Stuyvesant Brewery, shown here in a 1930s etching, was one of the few that survived the decimation brought to the industry by Prohibition. The brewery was located near First Street and Bowery. This First Street and Bowery image is part of the "Vintage New York" exhibit, created by the New Rochelle Council on The Arts (NRCA); Thea Eichler, Program Chairman; with the assistance a grant from the Michael and Helen Schaffer Foundation. © All images in this exhibit are the property of their respective copyright holders, and may not be reproduced without permission. |
